Microsoft Excel
Intermediate (SS-02)

Course Overview

The Intermediate Microsoft EXCEL course is one of a number of one-day courses we offer to those wishing to learn how to use Microsoft Office applications efficiently and effectively to produce professional-looking documents, including numerical data and charts.
On this course, delegates will learn how to create more sophisticated spreadsheets, including a range of formulae.

Who is the course for?

This course is aimed at:
  • anyone who needs to use Microsoft EXCEL in their workplace or in another context to produce spreadsheet for more complex data analysis
  • those who have some experience of using Microsoft EXCEL and want to learn more about its functionality and possibilities
  • those who have attended our Beginners' Microsoft EXCEL course and can create and edit simple spreadsheets, including basic formulae and formatting of cells
  • administrators, personal assistants or other staff who have responsibility for producing presenting and analysing data for different purposes.

Content / Programme

This course takes place over one day (see below for timing and lunch arrangements) and during that time, delegates will learn how to:
  • merge cells and align data within cells
  • use different cell formats
  • use multiple sheets for different purposes, including LOOKUP tables
  • use VLOOKUP to extract data from another sheet
  • use IF formulae to determine a cell's value based on the value of one or more cells (including using AND/OR)
  • use nested IF formulae to create multiple conditions for determining cell values
  • use formulae COUNTIF and COUNTIFS to count cell values dependent on specific criteria
  • use SUMIF and SUMIFS to add a range of values depending on specific criteria
  • import and export data in different formats, e.g. CSV - Comm Separated Values
  • use data validation to ensure data entered is valid
  • use simple conditional formatting to change the format (e.g. shading) of a cell according to its value
All participants will have access to a computer for the whole day.
The version of Microsoft EXCEL used on the day will be EXCEL 2016.

Assessment and Qualification

The course is not assessed or part of a qualification, although delegates will be given a 'certificate of completion' and self-assessment to track their progress during the day and encourage thinking about future learning.

  • The course will take place at our Trafford Park Centre, details of which can be found here.
