Microsoft Word
Intermediate (WP-02)

Course Overview

The Intermediate Microsoft WORD course is one of a number of one-day courses we offer to those wishing to learn how to use Microsoft Office applications efficiently (including quick techniques and short cuts) and effectively to produce professional-looking documents.
On this course, delegates will learn how to create more sophisticated and professional-looking documents.  We introduce columns, section breaks, mail-merge and inserting different elements into documents including simple charts and graphs, Word Art and screenshots.

Who is the course for?

This course is aimed at:
  • anyone who needs to use Microsoft Word in their workplace or in another context to produce more complex documents
  • those who have some experience of using Microsoft Word and want to learn more about its functionality and possibilities
  • those who have attended our Beginners' Microsoft WORD course and can create and edit documents, including using tables, text formatting, headers and footers and inserting pictures.
  • administrators, personal assistants or other staff who have responsibility for producing documents such as letters, reports, newsletters, etc.

Content / Programme

This course takes place over one day (see below for timing and lunch arrangements) and during that time, delegates will learn how to:
  • use columns to organise text on the page for different purposes, e.g. a newsletter or brochure
  • create section breaks within a document so that different parts of a document can be orientated as landscape or portrait
  • format cells within tables for greater effect and presentation
  • use a simple spreadsheet data source (such as an address list) to carry out a mail-merge to create personalised copies of a letter (some knowledge of Microsoft Excel is useful but not essential)
  • use mail-merge for different purposes other than personalising letters
  • use styles and headings and apply these to text
  • insert images into a document and position them in different ways
  • crop and edit pictures inserted into a document
  • create footnotes and endnotes
All participants will have access to a computer for the whole day.
The version of Microsoft Word used on the day will be WORD 2016.

Assessment and Qualification

The course is not assessed or part of a qualification, although delegates will be given a 'certificate of completion' and self-assessment to track their progress during the day and encourage thinking about future learning.

Location, Timings and Facilities

  • The course will take place at our Trafford Park Centre, details of which can be found here.
  • The course will start at 9.30am and finish at 3.30pm.  There will be a break of 30 minutes during the day (usually about 12noon) for lunch.
