An Introduction to Microsoft Excel
Beginners (SS-01)

Course Overview

The Introduction to Microsoft EXCEL course is one of a number of one-day courses we offer to those wishing to learn how to use Microsoft Office applications efficiently (including quick techniques and short cuts) and effectively to produce professional-looking documents.
On this course, delegates will learn how to create spreadsheets for different purposes and explore some of the functionality that makes a spreadsheet a powerful tool.  The course covers the basic of spreadsheets, including formatting columns, rows and cells, entering different types of data in cells, creating formulas to create calculations, sorting and filtering.

Who is the course for?

This course is aimed at:
  • anyone who needs to use Microsoft Excel in their workplace or in another context, including the home
  • administrators, personal assistants or other staff who have responsibility for producing documents such as letters, reports, newsletters, etc.

Content / Programme

This course takes place over one day (see below for timing and lunch arrangements) and during that time, delegates will learn how to:
  • create a spreadsheet for a specific purpose
  • enter and format data in cells in different ways, e.g. currency, dates
  • set up and format column and row headings, widths and heights
  • enter mathematical formulae into cells to create data relationships between cells
  • copy (replicate) a formulae to a range of cells
  • insert and delete columns and rows
  • use multiple sheets within a spreadsheet workbook and copy a worksheet to create another
  • create charts and graphs using the data in the spreadsheet
  • sort and filter data
  • print in different orientations, fitting the worksheet, rows, columns or selected area on a single page
  • define print titles and print areas
All participants will have access to a computer for the whole day.
The version of Microsoft EXCEL used on the day will be EXCEL 2016

Assessment and Qualification

The course is not assessed or part of a qualification, although delegates will be given a 'certificate of completion' and self-assessment to track their progress during the day and encourage thinking about future learning.
