Introduction to Trainer Skills
City and Guilds Certificate (Course 7300)

Introduction / Context

In any company, organisation, charity or education (e.g. college or school) setting, there will be staff members who have some responsiblity, even if not their main role, for providing training to others.  This could be induction training or whole-team training for key aspects of the business or service delivery, e.g. operational changes, new methods or ways of working, policy changes, Health and Safety

Overview

This two-day course is designed to provide delegates with an introduction to the systematic approach to training; that is how training sessions (however short or long) should be planned, designed, resourced and run with a group of participants so that their learning is effective. Through exemplar activities (the course will mirror the qualification requirements), practical tasks and assessment on the second day (see below), the  course will enable delegates to deliver effective training to others. The course is generic (given that delegates will have different work contexts) but some industry-specific examples will be used.  Delegates will be given course materials and a short activity to complete prior to Day 1 and between Day 1 and Day 2.

Who is the course for?

This City and Guilds course is aimed at anyone in an organisation who is tasked with designing and running training sessions (either as a Training Officer or a member of the team with a specific area of responsibility (e.g. Health and Safety) to develop the knowledge or skills of other members of staff or volunteers.  The course is aimed at those who have a substantial training element to their role (although this is not teaching qualification) or need to run regular training sessions with staff as part of a much wider role.

Bespoke Training

We can adapt and offer this 2-day course to meet clients' needs at clients' own premises.  We would need a meeting (presentation) space with desks for up to 6 delegates, access to a digital projector and WIFI, and enough space for a trainer and delegates to present their material.   If, as a business, you would like the people responsible for training others in your organisation to do so in a consistent way, this course will achieve that.  This may be ideal if you want a number of staff who have training delivery as part of their role to be trained to deliver that training in a consistent way

Content

This course takes place over two days.  These are usually consecutive days, although the two days can be a few days apart (this allows time for delegates to plan a presentation for the second day).
Day 1
On Day 1, delegates will learn the principles of effective training, how to engage and involve participants through active (rather than passive) learning and how training sessions should be designed, delivered and assessed.  This includes:
  • planning training sessions with a clear purpose (related to organisational goals), broad aims and specific objectives
  • setting ground rules for participants
  • use of icebreakers to engage participants
  • creating an effective learning environment
  • prior learning and progress indicators
  • how people learn and strategies to promote effective learning and knowledge retention (including some of the latest research about effective learning)
  • purposeful training activities (that enable effective acquisition of new knowledge or skills in different ways)
  • training resources
  • gaining and maintaining attention and motivating participants
  • assessment of training and related qualification (if appropriate)
Day 2
After a short recap of the first day, the second day of the course gives delegates an opportunity to put some of the knowledge and skills learned on Day 1 into practice by planning and delivering a short knowledge-sharing (mini training) session (of no more 10-15 minutes) which will actively involve other delegates.  The tutor will observe the sessions and provide constructive feedback (which will identify strengths and areas for development) given verbally on the day in private or, if preferred, by email.  Delegates should not worry too much about this!  On this day, some time is allocated for delegates to plan their session and for feedback to be given to each delegate.  Given the time needed for this, this course usually runs with a maximum of five or six delegates.

Assessment and Qualification

The knowledge and practical skills gained on the course will be assessed by a multiple choice quiz and an observation (by the course tutor and other participants) of the participants' delivered session, for which candidates will receive feedback.  The course is not part of a qualification framework but is accredited by City and Guilds.  All delegates who meet the assessment criteria will receive a certificate from City and Guilds.
