Introduction
Functional Skills is a practical, nationally recognised qualifications in Mathematics. Functional Skills provide an individual with essential knowledge, skills and understanding that will enable them to operate confidently, effectively and independently in life and work.
They are learning tools that enable learners to:
• apply their knowledge and understanding to everyday life
• solve problems in both familiar and unfamiliar situations
• develop personally and professionally as positive citizens who can actively contribute to society.
Functional Skills are important because they provide people with the skills, knowledge and understanding that they will need in order to progress and succeed in education, work and life.
Course content, Key areas:
• Representing – making sense of a situation and representing it mathematically.
• Analysing – processing and using maths.
• Interpreting – interpreting and communicating the results of analysis.
Qualifications gained
Mathematics: Functional Skills, Level 1 City & Guilds
Mathematics: Functional Skills, Level 2 City & Guilds
Functional Skills at Level 2 is equivalent to a GCSE grade 4 (old grade C).
Progression opportunities
Learners use this qualification for entry to FE/HE courses.
Teaching and Assessment
A variety of methods and materials are used, with an emphasis on practical experience in class-based activities – all supported by materials prepared by the Centre. Individualised support and tutoring is a specific and key feature of our teaching delivery. Every learner is supported to ensure they achieve the maximum from studies and experiences with us.
This programme is a continually assessed as it progresses and each unit is individually assessed. End of unit assessments are taken when the learner has reached the required standard. The end of unit assessments are set and marked by City & Guilds.
Entry Requirements
Entry requirements require evidence of competence at the level below that to be studied and this is assessed through diagnostic testing prior to start of course. This is to ensure we place the right applicant at the correct level for them to progress and achieve.
